Preparing for Your Amateur Radio License

The Lancaster and Fairfield County Amateur Radio Club (LFCARC) hosts amateur radio training sessions throughout the year. Please see the Club activities Calendar for training session dates.

If you would like to attend an amateur radio training session, please contact our ARRL Registered License Instructor training@k8qik.org by email and include your name, address and phone number. You will then be contacted with further details and requirements for the training session.

** PLEASE NOTE: The instructor only schedules *one* license level class at a time, so be sure to be specific when sending him an email as to what license level class you would like to participate in.

What to bring to the training session:

  1. A notepad and pen or pencil.
  2. You should bring the correct license class manual with you to the class you will be attending:
    1. Technician Class - ARRL Ham Radio License Manual 4th Edition (July 1, 2022 - Sept 30, 2025)
    2. General Class - ARRL General Class License Manual 5th Edition (July 1, 2013 - Sept 30, 2026)
    3. Extra Class - ARRL Extra Class License Manual 11th Edition (July 1, 2021 - Sept 30, 2025)

As with the actual license exam session, please bring a positive attitude, some patience and lots of questions. Our ARRL Registered License Instructor is very knowledgeable and willing to answer all of your amateur radio related questions. Please remember, there is NEVER a stupid question, you are attending this training session because you want to learn. He and other volunteers within the club are excited that you have taken this interest in the amateur radio hobby and they are ready and willing to help you learn all you can so that you will be prepared for Exam Day. Have faith and confidence in yourself and most importantly, study your license exam manual and follow all of the assignments that our ARRL Registered License Instructor gives you and you will be well on you way to passing your amateur radio license exam. The best of luck to you and we look forward to seeing you at our next scheduled training session.

You can purchase the required books and other training material from the ARRL Store. These are training materials that are sponsored by the American Radio Relay League and will be used in our training sessions.

In addition to the ARRL training material, you can also purchase training material from the Gordon West Radio School. This material is produced by Gordon "Gordo" West - WB6NOA and is presented in a very easy and fun way to learn Amateur Radio.
